CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – South Dakota State sits in 8th place after the first session of the Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. SDSU has 24.50 points and has three wrestlers in the championship round of 16. No. 2 Minnesota leads the team standings with 39 points.
“The guys are wrestling well,” head coach Chris Bono said. “There is a lot of tournament left and we have some tough matches coming up tonight. We’re excited for tonight’s second session.”

After receiving a win by forfeit in the opening round, senior Eric Orozco (141) defeated Griffin Higginbotham (Unattached – Cornell), 2-0. Orozco will wrestle No. 4 Chris Dardanes (Minnesota) in the round of 16.
Junior Cody Pack (157) recorded a major decision over Chad Pyke (NC State), 14-5 in the opening round. Pack also defeated Robert Burg (Navy), 5-2. The returning NCAA qualifier will face No. 11 Brian Realbuto (Cornell) in tonight’s second session.
Sophomore J.J. Everard (285) recorded a pair of decision wins to advance to the round of 16. Everard defeated Robert Coe (North Carolina), 9-4 and Josh Marchok (Stanford), 6-4. Everard will square off against Blake Herrin (American).
Freshman Isaac Andrade (125), redshirt freshman Alex Kocer (149), junior Joe Brewster (165), freshman Brady Ayers (174), Ben Schwery (184) and redshirt freshman Trey Hable (197) will all wrestle in tonight’s wrestlebacks.
Session II is set to begin at 5:45 p.m. (ET) and will include the championship round of 16 and consolation round 3.
