The last College of Commissioners meeting of the year is set to adopt five files and entail three back-to-back press conferences.
On the agenda: College of Commissioners meeting, Poland, financial services, Brexit, visas, Sebastian Kurz.
On the podium: Commission chief spokesman Margaritis Schinas.
Busy College meeting: There is a packed agenda for the last College of Commissioners meeting of the year Wednesday. First, Commission First Vice President Frans Timmermans will update reporters on the Commission’s concerns about Poland’s controversial judiciary reforms. Then Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis will present in the pressroom a dossier related to financial services.
Brexit update: EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier will present the Commission’s updated guidelines on the next phase of the talks. Expect a decision as well by the Commission on visa reciprocity between the EU and third countries. On Thursday, the commissioner for employment, Marianne Thyssen, will update reporters on the written statement directive, which pertains to the rights of new employees.
Rendezvous with Austria: Schinas also confirmed that Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and the new Austrian chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, will hold a press conference this evening in the Commission press room.
Not on the agenda: Schinas said he “does not think” reporters and EU observers should watch out for a reaction from the Commission after the snap Catalan election on Thursday.
