This week’s meeting of the College of Commissioners will be the last before the summer break, but chief spokesman Margaritis Schinas told the (few) reporters present on Tuesday that there will be plenty to talk about.

At Wednesday’s meeting, commissioners will continue to debate the situation in Poland, where President Andrzej Duda pledged to veto two controversial bills on reforming the judiciary. On Tuesday morning, however, Duda signed another bill that would allow the country’s justice minister to hire and fire the heads of local courts.

Commissioners will also discuss progress on migration and security, and will be informed about the latest developments in the U.S. on a draft bill on Russia sanctions that could affect European companies.

The Commission’s first vice president, Frans Timmermans, the commissioner for home affairs and migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, and Julian King, who is in the charge of the security union, will provide readouts to reporters on those topics.

Schinas declined to take questions about Turkey, including on whether to freeze EU funds to Ankara due to recent events in the country. The EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and the enlargement and neighborhood commissioner, Johannes Hahn, are slated to hold a press conference in Brussels with their Turkish counterparts later Tuesday.
