Three Vikings Take First at DWU Open; 11 Place in the Top-Four

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Augustana wrestling team powered through the Dakota Wesleyan Open with ease on Saturday. The Vikings had 11 wrestlers place in the top-four of their respective weight classes and three Vikings took first place.

Austin Jordan (141), Colin Ayers (149 and Ben Goodwin (197) each wrestled their way to first place finishes in their respective weight classes. At 184 pounds Aero Amo and Austin Ward, wrestling unattached, both made the finals but didn’t wrestle.

Clayton Wahlstrom (197) and Michael Lowman (285) each took second for the Vikings. Third place finishers were Brandon Carroll (125-unattached) and Mitch Rechtzigel (165). Fourth place finishers for Augustana were Jebben Keyes (133-unattached) and Tyler Nation (157).

Brandon Carroll wrestled unattached going 6-1 en route to a third place finish at 125 pounds. Carroll dropped his first match of the day and went on to reel off six consecutive wins, including four bonus point victories. Carroll finished the day with two tech falls, one pin and one major decision.

Javier Vieyra went 2-2 and Ethan Cota, who wrestled unattached, went 1-2.

Jebben Keyes wrestled unattached going 4-2 and finishing fourth at 133 pounds. Keyes posted two falls and a tech fall before dropping his semifinals match. Keyes won 10-4 in the consolation semis before falling in the third place match to finish in fourth.

Skylar Hieronimus, wrestling unattached, went 2-2 and Adrian Lozano went 0-2.

141
Austin Jordan was the champion of the 141 pound bracket, going 5-0 with one pin and one tech fall.

Deven Donais was 3-2 and defeat fellow Viking Joe Fischenich in the consolation bracket 6-4 in sudden victory. Fischenich also was 3-2 with one pin.

Brandon Charbonneau went 2-2 with both victories coming by decision.

149
Colin Ayers took first at 149 pounds after going 4-0. Ayers earned a major decision in the quarterfinals and a sudden victory in the semis.

Jacob Anderson went 4-2 with all of his wins coming of the bonus point variety. Anderson had three tech falls and one pin in 57 seconds.

Tyler Nation took fourth after going 3-2. Nation recorded a major decision in the quarterfinals.

Jackson Sweeney, wrestling unattached, finished the day 3-2 with two bonus point wins. Sweeney recorded a pin in 54 seconds and a 17-3 major decision.

Mitch Rechtzigel went 5-1 en route to a third place finish at 165 pounds. Rechtzigel record one pin and had four victories by decision.

Hunter Haman went 1-2 with a pin in 38 seconds and Bruce Lemon went 0-2.

Aero Amo and Austin Ward, wrestling unattached, each made the finals at 184 pounds, but didn’t wrestle each other. Amo went 4-0 with two wins by tech fall and one by pin. Ward went 3-0 with one win by tech fall and one by win.

Ben Goodwin and Clayton Wahlstrom faced off in the finals of the 197 pound bracket and Goodwin came away victories on a 3-2 decision. Goodwin went 3-0 with three decisions. Wahlstrom went 3-1 with three decisions.

Michael Lowman took second in the heavyweight bracket after going 4-1. Lowman recorded one pin and one major decision on the day.

Lane Lettau went 0-2 in his first action of the season.

Next up for the Vikings will be the Holiday Inn Open hosted by Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney, Neb. on Saturday, Nov. 19 beginning at 9 a.m.
