Start of 2024/25 Ligue 1 season delayed by Paris Olympics

With the 2024 Olympic Games taking place Paris – and several events being played out in different parts of the country as well – the French ministry for Culture has announced that the start of the 2024/25 Ligue 1 season will be delayed, report L’Équipe.

The Olympics are set to take place between July 26 and August 11, meaning the French domestic football season will not be able to start before August 16. The decision was announced in a statement covering the security measures surrounding cultural and sporting events to be held during that summer. With the Olympics taking up policing resources during that period, it was decided that the football season would be pushed back.

The change is not expected to have a significant impact on the Ligue 1 season though, given that the switch from 20 to 18 teams starting from next year will reduce the number of matchdays to 34.
