R Kelly charged with 11 new sexual assault charges against underage girl

Singer R Kelly has been charged with 11 new sexual assault charges against an under age girl, including some that carry a potential 30-year prison sentence.

The Grammy-award winning singer, whose legal name is Robert Kelly, is already facing ten counts of aggravated sexual abuse involving four women years ago, three of whom were minors when the alleged abuse occurred.

Prosecutors in Chicago said the new charges relate to an alleged incident occurred in January 2010 against a victim who was aged between 13 and 16 at the time.

The charges include four counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, two counts of criminal sexual assault by force, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and three counts of aggravated criminal abuse.

The four aggravated criminal sexual assault counts carry maximum terms of 30 years in prison, making them the most serious against the R&B star.

The new charges seemingly pertain to a single victim, identified in the court filing by the initials "J.P." Those are the same initials used in court documents to identify one of Kelly’s initial four accusers, raising the possibility that this is the same person rather than a new victim.

He has not yet responded to requests for comment about the new charges but is reportedly due to appear in court on June 6 in connection with them.

His lawyer, Steve Greenberg, confirmed to the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper that he had received word of new charges from prosecutors but had not seen any filings in the case. He did say he understood that the allegations are "from years ago."
