Jacks Drop 2nd Annual Battle of the Border Bell
FARGO, N.D. – South Dakota State (2-3, 0-0 WWC) won four matches, but dropped the 2nd Annual Battle of the Border Bell to North Dakota State (2-3, 0-0 WWC), 23-14.
Brance Simms, #14 Cody Pack, John Nething II and #15 Nate Rotertall picked up win for the Jacks, but it wasn’t enough.
“We saw some good things, but we are disappointed with today’s result,” head coach Chris Bono said. “We wrestled hard, but need to improve on a few little things. Once again, this is one more step towards March. We will get back in the room and get ready for a big weekend in Missouri.”
Following a major decision for the Bison at 125, junior Brance Simms answered with a major decision of his own, 11-3. Simms got a pair of third-period takedowns to solidify the major. Simms got his final takedown with 48 seconds remaining and rode Weber out, fending off Weber’s final escape attempts in the final seconds.

NDSU got back-to-back decisions at 141 and 149 to take a 10-4 lead heading into the 157-lb bout.
#14 Cody Pack came out aggressive in that bout with four takedowns in the first period before adding another in the second. Pack got three more in the third for the major, 16-6.
At 165, John Nething II got an early takedown against Anthony Caputo. Following a Caputo escape and in the neutral position, Caputo was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. Nething added a second takedown and led 5-1 after the first. Nething added another takedown in the second and two more in the third for the 12-6 decision.
NDSU won two in a row by nationally-ranked Kurtis Julson (174) and Hayden Zillmer (184), who are ranked #15 and #10, respectively.
At 197, redshirt freshman Nate Rotert recorded a pair of takedowns in the first and added another in the second to lead 7-2 heading into the final period. In a back-and-forth third, Peterson added a takedown, but Rotert escaped and held on to get his 14th win of the season. In the finale, #13 Evan Knutson pinned J.J. Everard for the 23-14 final.
SDSU returns to action December 19 with three duals in Columbia, Missouri, against Kent State, SIU-Edwardsville and Missouri.
North Dakota State is off until Dec. 29-30 when the Bison will compete at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill.
