According to The Wrap, the hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown began to surface last November, however it recently picked up steam this month—distressing timing considering its Pride Month. It has been suggested that it was actually resurrected “by the gays” as a satirical joke.
That seems to be the case in certain circumstances, where Twitter users shared “#TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown” fictions detailing how the actress “bashed” them. Others have photoshopped images of Brown with homophobic slurs made to look like a Snapchat caption. Clearly, the joke failed to land, and many images and stories have been co-opted by users that are actually homophobic.

Though she deleted her main account (@milliebbrown), Brown still has the @MillieStopsHate account, but has not tweeted since December 2017. “I want this account to share love and positivity. Let’s stop bullying,” she writes on that account’s bio. On Wednesday, she shared an Instagram story selfie with the caption, “Good vibes only.”

Regardless of the context of the meme, subtly defaming a teenager’s character is pretty gross. We hope the trolls will end up in the Upside Down.
