Laurent Blanc laments Lyon ‘bad choices’ following Marseille loss

Speaking to L’Équipe following Olympique Lyonnais’ 1-0 loss away to Marseille on Sunday evening at the Stade Vélodrome, manager Laurent Blanc has lamented is side’s ‘bad choices’ made during the course of the game, regretting an overall lack of technical control on the ball in the first half.

What would your assessment be of this match?

When you come here and you only play one half, it’s difficult to come back with points, I told the players. In the first half, in the use of the ball, we were mediocre, far too mediocre. When we got the ball back, we made bad choices, for example, on a three against one after a corner for them. We made the wrong choices at the wrong times. We got the ball back and gave it away within thirty seconds. In the second half, the game was chaotic, Marseille didn’t play much, they defended well. If we were more serious with the ball, sincerely, you could take a point without any problem. In the second half, we were in control, but we were not protected from a counter-attack.

How did your changes affect the game in the second half?

It was better in the second half, Marseille were probably less efficient in their defensive positioning. But I would have liked to have taken a goal from a move, not from a set piece. There was a big mistake in marking the Marseille corner. It would have been nice to go into the locker room at 0-0, but there was too little in the first half. Defensively, it was a good performance

After one of Lyon’s worst run of results in 30 years, Dutch manager Peter Bosz was sacked – which provoked Les Gones’ move to hire Blanc as head coach of the first team. Since his arrival at the club, Blanc has tried to change the side both in terms of mentality and formation, which has illicited some mixed results. Whilst the Frenchman will be happy with two wins on the board and signs of improvement, he was equally lost two matches against Marseille (1-0) and Rennes (3-2) respectively.
