James Ellsworth to challenge AJ Styles for his title on SmackDown next week

James Ellsworth will be getting a shot at the WWE World Championship.

SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan announced on Tuesday night’s edition of Talking Smack that Ellsworth would challenge AJ Styles for his title on next week’s edition of SmackDown.

Ellsworth made his return to WWE television on Tuesday night, and was victorious in a non-title match against Styles. Dean Ambrose, the special guest referee for the match, helped Ellsworth get the win by favoring him all match and hitting Dirty Deeds on Styles to set up the finish.

There was a scary moment during the match when Ellsworth tucked his head on a Styles Clash, but he appeared to avoid injury.

It seems likely that the match was booked to further the ongoing feud between Styles and Ambrose.

The appearance was the third time that Ellsworth has appeared on WWE TV this year. Ellsworth, an independent wrestler previously known as Jimmy Dream, received significant attention after he was utilized in a squash against Braun Strowman on Raw in July. He later appeared on SmackDown before returning to the show on Tuesday night.

Next week’s show will also see Alexa Bliss face Naomi, and Baron Corbin will take on Jack Swagger.
