Ireland: Star full-back Hugo Keenan signs three-year deal with the IRFU

Full-back Hugo Keenan will remain in Ireland for at least the next three years after agreeing a deal with the Irish Rugby Football Union.

It is a boost for the national team and Leinster, where he will stay for the duration of his central contract.

Keenan played age-grade rugby for Ireland in 2016 before focusing on Sevens for two years between 2017 and 2019.

He then became a key part of the Leinster squad before making his Test debut against Italy in October 2020.

History-maker

David Nucifora, the IRFU performance director, said: “Hugo is the first player to come through the Sevens Programme to attain a Central 15s Contract.

“His dedication to improvement and his drive have gotten him to this point of his career and after impressing in his first season at senior international level, he has kicked on again over the past 12 months.

“He is the type of player that drives standards around him and he will have a key role to play for both Ireland and Leinster over the next few seasons.”

After making an immediate impression for Andy Farrell’s men, Keenan has cemented his spot in the international side.

The 26-year-old has featured in 27 of his country’s past 29 matches, playing a vital role in their rise to the number one spot in the world rankings.

Outstanding form

He started all three Tests in their historic 2-1 series victory over New Zealand last July and has shone in the opening two matches of the 2023 Six Nations.

After playing a big part in the 34-10 win over Wales in Round One, the full-back touched down for Ireland’s first try in their 32-19 triumph over France.

Keenan said: “I am delighted to be part of two very competitive and ambitious environments with Ireland and Leinster.

“I am enjoying my rugby and looking to improve each week and there are so many opportunities to learn more about the game with the quality of coaches we have at provincial and national level.”
