Gregory van der Wiel in dramatic bust up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic

It emerged last night via initial reports from TV show L’Équipe du Soir that Dutch right-back Gregory van der Wiel had a major bust up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic at half-time during PSG’s match on Sunday against ESTAC Troyes.

PSG won the game 9-0, allowing them to clinch the Ligue 1 title in emphatic style. But Gregory van der Wiel only played the first half.

At half time, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is understood to have confronted Gregory van der Wiel, demanding that the Dutchman pass the ball quicker. van der Wiel is understood to have taken offence to the Swede’s comments and the pair raised voices at each other before the Dutchman walked out on the dressing room at half-time.

van der Wiel actually exited the stadium at half-time and was substituted by Marquinhos, leaving the match with girlfriend Rose Bertram who had travelled to watch her boyfriend play.

Gregory van der Wiel was recently in the papers for the wrong reasons again when he appeared to threaten a youth in the streets of Paris after the latter individual is understood to have shouted: “Go Marseille!” in a provocative way towards the Dutchman.

van der Wiel’s PSG contract expires at the end of the season and although he had been offered a contract extension, it is unclear whether that is still on the table. Initially, van der Wiel refused to sign it because it was not financially attractive enough.

The player is understood to have interest from English clubs. Although Serge Aurier is likely to return as PSG’s number one choice at right-back when his internal suspension ceases following the Periscope scandal, there is still a possibility that PSG decide to offer van der Wiel an improved, new contract due to the lack of availability of top class right-backs in Europe.
