Former defender Basile Boli says Cristiano Ronaldo was in talks with Marseille this summer

As reported by RMC Sport, former Marseille defender Basile Boli has told Togolese channel NW Sport TV that Cristiano Ronaldo was in talks with the Ligue 1 side this summer, at which point the Portuguese forward was already heading for the exit door at Manchester United.

The former French international has explained that he believed the transfer would have been beneficial to French football, and that “he’s a talented player, even if he is a bit old”. Boli, who famously headed in the winner in the 1993 Champions League final, added that Ronaldo would be able to “send shivers” through several teams in Ligue 1, and that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s arrival would be a statement signing.

Despite a widespread campaign on social media from Marseille fans calling for his signing, president Pablo Longoria has denied any interest on numerous occasions. Ronaldo currently finds himself clubless, having left Manchester United in the wake of an explosive interview aired before the World Cup.
