Selena Gomez made about 169 million followers skid their mad scrolling to a halt when she announced via Instagram stories that she planned to launch a beauty line, Rare Beauty. "I want to highlight the stories of our community and build something special together," Selena Gomez wrote in a statement to Allure. "I hope the Rare Beauty community is full of life."
And now she's back with more news: Rare Beauty will launch its first #WeAreRare community call today, Thursday, February 27.
What is a community call, you ask? It's an invitation to share your story (in this case, what makes you "rare" because duh, the line is called Rare Beauty), along with your Sephora Color IQ (to help shade-match you to the Rare Beauty products for you), and your Instagram handle. If your story is one of the 50 or fewer chosen by the Rare Beauty team, you'll be featured in a campaign.
"Every type of human — however you look, however you love — is welcome," says Gomez. "Ultimately, I hope it's a safe place where people can chat, have fun, and support each other."
Is it possible that this community could eventually influence future product launches? "Nothing is off the table," says Katie Welch, Rare Beauty's chief marketing officer. "The community call will bring upwards of 50 people together to join the mission of the brand, getting early access to product, exclusive merch, and, more importantly, making new friends and connecting to each other."

Welch clarifies that if you aren't among the initial 50 or fewer Rare Beauty community members chosen, it doesn't mean you won't have an opportunity to join at a later date. Which is great because between early trials, IRL events, and exclusive merch, it sounds pretty dang cool. So whether you're sending in a submission today — or sometime down the line, keep this in mind: "Authenticity is one [quality that embodies the brand], so are empowerment and positivity," Welch says. "And so much comes back to the word 'rare' and celebrating the unique. She's been doing that [messaging] a lot with the album, and that's just a segue to the beauty aspect."
While the product won't be in Sephora stores until later this summer, you'll want to hit up your local Sephora to get your Color IQ number prior to submitting. "This will help us with potential product sampling," Welch explains. "It will be a fully diverse range and we want to make sure we sample the right products to the right shade."
If you read that last sentence again, yes, it's a bit of a clue (fine, not a very detailed one) that the line will either include color cosmetics or possibly even complexion products, but we'll leave that to you to decode. For now, you can submit your story on Rare Beauty's website and follow them on social media for updates.
And don't get caught up in the comparison game while you're at it: "There's so much pressure everywhere around you to look a certain way, especially in beauty. I feel like the word 'rare' helps to eliminate all of the pressures to be perfect — it's saying you're one-of-a-kind and you are meant to be who you are," Gomez says. "That's Rare Beauty. We want to celebrate why you're rare. I want people out there to feel beautiful exactly how they are. Makeup is something to enjoy, not something you need."
