On May 6, the European Commission will put forward a draft proposal for a new long-term budget, including a plan to finance the economic recovery from the coronavirus crisis, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told EU leaders on Thursday.

The timing, which von der Leyen confirmed during a videoconference of EU heads of state and government, gives the Commission just 13 days to develop the plans, which are expected to include financing for a recovery initiative totaling as much as €2 trillion.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel asked von der Leyen, a former longtime minister in Merkel governments, to confirm the date, and when von der Leyen did so, the chancellor replied, “Don’t forget to talk to us,” two officials who heard the exchange told POLITICO.

The Commission and EU member countries have at times seemed disconnected in the response to the coronavirus crisis, with capitals at one point demanding that von der Leyen delay plans to unveil a strategy for exiting containment measures because they felt it was premature.
