Black/Red Classic to feature 2015 NCAA Championship banner ceremony

St. Cloud State University will salute its 2015 NCAA Division II national champion wrestling team with a special banner unveiling ceremony on Friday, Nov. 6 in Halenbeck Hall. The event will take place after competition in the annual Black/Red Classic Intrasquad meet, which will begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6.

The ceremony will include the unveiling of the 2015 NCAA Division II championship banner in the rafters at Halenbeck Hall along with a championship ring presentation ceremony for the members of the title team.

The public is invited to attend both the Black/Red Classic intrasquad match along with the banner ceremony, and admission for both is free.

The intrasquad match will feature matches between SCSU wrestlers in each weight division. The evening’s honorary coaches for the Black/Red Classic will be former SCSU wrestlers Jake Roberts (2007-10) and Adam Hill (2005-09). Both were wrestlers for Coach Steve Costanzo during his early years at SCSU. Costanzo will be celebrating his 10th season with the Huskies in 2015-16.

HUSKIES HEADLINES:

  • SCSU won its first-ever NCAA Division II national team title in 2015. SCSU gained 84.5 points in the meet while runner-up Nebraska-Kearney had 76.5 points and Maryville had 61.0 points.
  • The Huskies were picked #2 in the Division II Preseason Coaches’ Poll for 2015-16. Maryville was the number team in the poll while SCSU and UN-Kearney shared the number two position in the poll.

  • SCSU’s Tim Prescott (125), Clint Poster (157) and Austin Goergen (285) all earned number one preseason individual rankings in the DII poll, while Gabe Fogarty gained a number two ranking at 165 in the preseason poll.
  • SCSU was ranked number two in the Division II Super 3 Region preseason poll for 2015-16 behind Maryville.
  • SCSU was ranked number one in the NSIC preseason conference poll for 2015-16. The Huskies have won four consecutive NSIC championships and have not lost a dual match in league competition since the 2010-11 season.
  • In the preseason Super 3 Region individual rankings, Prescott (125), Poster (157), Fogarty (165) and Goerge (285) all earned number one rankings in their respective weight classes.
  • In the preseason NSIC individual rankings for 2015-16, Prescott (125), Jay Hildreth (149), Poster (157), Fogarty (165), Clayton Jennissen (174) and Goergen (285) all gained number one rankings in the polls.
  • The Huskies qualified six wrestlers for the NCAA championships in 2015 and all six earned All-America status. All six of the wrestlers return to the SCSU lineup in 2015-16.
  • SCSU’s Tim Prescott won the NCAA DII championship at 125 pounds in 2015. He was joined in the All-America circle by Austin Goergen (2nd at 285), Clint Poster (3rd at 157), Gabe Fogarty (3rd at 165), Mike Rhone (5th at 133) and Larry Bomstad (7th at 149).
  • Clint Poster tied a team record last year with 40 wins (40-1). He ties the 40 win record along with Shamus O’Grady, who had 40 wins in 2012-13 and Tad Merritt in 2010-11. His lone loss last year came at the NCAA DII Championships.
  • The Huskies set a team record with 255 pins in 2014-15. The old record of 179 pins was set during the 2013-14 season. Austin Goergen and Larry Bomstad led the charge with 15 pins apiece. Bomstad earned the NCAA trophy at last year’s championship tournament for most pins in the least amount of time. Goergen already has 34 falls in two seasons with the Huskies.
  • A three-time All-American, Poster owns a 108-14 career record at SCSU. Of note, the most wins in a career at SCSU was set by Tad Merritt with 144 wins from 2008-12.
  • Tim Prescott is the fourth SCSU wrestler to gained an NCAA DII national championship.
  • SCSU placed second at the 2015 NCAA DII Super Regional and also placed third at the 2015 NWCA Division II National Duals.
  • SCSU scored a 17-2, 8-0 NSIC record in 2014-15.
  • The Huskies have only lost three dual matches over the last four years. Over that span, SCSU has scored a 78-3 record and a 31-0 mark in the always rugged NSIC.
  • Coach Steve Costanzo begins his 10th season at SCSU in 2015-16. He owns a 136-26 record during his tenure in the Granite City, and he ranks second in the team records for most wins by a coach behind the legendary John Oxton, who has 167 wins from 1967-87.
