That’s right! The unthinkable has happened. Baron Corbin cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on the most recent edition of Smackdown and he actually lost. This makes Corbin one of the unfortunate rare few people that have managed to cash in the briefcase unsuccessfully. Others include John Cena losing his match against CM Punk on Raw 1000 back in 2012, and Damien Sandow failing to defeat John Cena for the WWE Championship back in 2013. Baron Corbin shocked the majority of the wrestling world when he lost because most fans assumed that Corbin would be getting a push as world champion at some point very soon.
John Cena took on current champion Jinder Mahal on Smackdown when Corbin ran down to the ring and walloped Cena with the briefcase twice for the disqualification finish. Meanwhile, Corbin noticed Jinder Mahal lying motionless in the corner of the ring. “The Lone Wolf” tried to take advantage of this opportunity, but he became distracted when Cena suddenly hopped onto the ring apron. After the brief distraction, Mahal managed to roll up Corbin to retain his title. Baron Corbin has officially cashed in the briefcase and now his right to challenge for the WWE Championship has been revoked as a result of the cash-in failure.
Baron Corbin managed to win the Money in the Bank briefcase this year when he bested Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Shinsuke Nakamura, Dolph Ziggler and AJ Styles in a ladder match. The briefcase almost guarantees the winner will become the champion once they cash in, but Corbin has indeed failed to do so. Some fans, including Dave Meltzer, have remarked that Corbin is not ready to be WWE Champion at the moment. Unless something has changed though, WWE is still said to be very high on Baron Corbin right now, so it is still possible that he could win the title at some point down the road. For now, Baron will be facing John Cena at SummerSlam this Sunday night.
