Tensions barely concealed as North and South Korea march under one flag

On the face of it, the Winter Olympics opening ceremony was dripping with the symbolism of peace. Just 50 miles from their militarised border, athletes from North and South Korea marched under a joint flag.

Up in the VIP box, South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in waved proudly as, directly behind him, dressed in a sombre black coat, Kim Yo-jong, the sister of Kim Jong-un, applauded the teams.

The two had just shared a historic handshake at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Pyeongchang on Friday, where opposing powers, locked in a nuclear stand-off, mingled momentarily in the VIP box.
