Seven Mavericks Make it Through Day One of Regionals

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — In an action packed day one of the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Tournament, the Maverick wrestling team had seven of its wrestlers survive day one.

Alphonso Vruno (Sr., 141 lbs.) finished 2-0 on the day. He picked up a win in the first round in a 14-6 major decision over Kristian Vazquez (MSU-Moorhead). Vruno then won his second match after defeating Rudy Guillen (U-Mary) by a 5-1 decision.

Daniel Close (Jr., 149 lbs.) picked up an upset in the first round after winning by fall over Damien Penichet (Upper Iowa) in 4:44. He was defeated in his quarterfinal match, but then defeated Conner Loderhose (Ouachita Baptist) in a 4-2 decision to advance to day two.

#7 Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs.) advanced to the semi-finals after going 2-0. He first defeated Dane Fischer (U-Mary) by a 16-0 technical fall in the first round, and then followed up with a 14-7 decision over Blake Perryman (Northern State) in the quarterfinals.

#7 Adam Cooling (Jr., 174 lbs.) became the third Maverick on the day to go 2-0. Cooling bested Riley Nagel (U-Mary) in a 19-4 technical fall in the first round, then defeating Kyle Begin (SMSU) by decision, 5-3, in the quarterfinals.

Scott VanDeLoo (Sr., 184 lbs.) advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Briley Crissler (Minot State) by a 10-1 major decision. After dropping his contest in the quarterfinals, VanDeLoo picked up a 7-3 decision over Austin May (MSU-Moorhead) to advance to day two.

Darick Vancura (Jr., 197 lbs.) finished 2-1 on the day, which was enough to advance to day two. Vancura pinned Tom DeVito (U-Mary) in the first round in 2:14. Vancura lost a close match in the quarterfinals, but then bounced back by defeating Luke Diener (McKendree University) by a 16-0 technical fall.

Malcolm Allen (R-Sr., 285 lbs.) looked impressive after going 2-0 on the day. He first won by fall over Aaron Clayton (Ouachita Baptist) in 37 seconds, and then upset Michael Lowman (Augustana) by a 6-3 decision to advance to the semi-finals. Lowman had previously defeated Allen in their dual back in January.

Trevor Schultz (Jr., 125 lbs.), Paul Selman (Fr., 133 lbs.), and Brad Maas (Sr., 165 lbs.) all saw their seasons come to an end on Saturday, after finishing 0-2.

Minnesota State will be right back at it again on Sunday, with wrestling beginning at 11:00 a.m. and a trip to the Division II National Championships at stake.
