Johnnies Open Wrestling Season at RCTC Open

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Saint John’s wrestling opened its 2016-17 season with eight student-athletes competing at the Rochester Community and Technical College Open on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Sophomore Luke Dodd (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) finished second at 197 pounds with a 2-1 record. He started the day with an 8-2 win over Division II Upper Iowa’s Brock Sorensen and earned a trip to the final with a 7-5 victory over RCTC’s Michael Bothwell. Upper Iowa’s Nick Baumler won the championship bout with a 15-4 major decision.

Freshman Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) claimed fifth place with a 3-2 record at 133 pounds. He cruised to the semifinals with a pair of decisions, 7-3 and 8-4, before falling to Division II Augustana’s (S.D.) Jebben Keyes by a 7-4 score. He suffered a more narrow loss to another Augie wrestler, Skylar Hieronimus, 8-6 in the consolation semifinal. Becker bounced back with a 14-1 major decision over Ridgewater’s Keinnan Thacker to finish fifth.

The Johnnies travel further south next Saturday, Nov. 12, for the Luther Open. The tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
