For the third straight year, the Gophers earned a top-four finish at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, finishing fourth among a field that included eight teams ranked among the nation’s 20 best.
Two Gophers also won individual championships at the event, matching the team’s total from 2014. Jake Short, unranked entering the tournament, marched to the top of the 157-pound podium, while his teammate, second-ranked 197-pounder Brett Pfarr, dominated the field at his weight, earning bonus points in all five of his victories and beating his opponents by an average of 11 points per match.
Those two led a pack of five placewinners for the Gophers, a quintet that also included No. 8 Michael Kroells (third at heavyweight), Mitch McKee (fourth at 133 pounds) and Nick Wanzek (eighth at 174).
