SMSU to face four non-conference opponents in Augustana Duals

MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State (0-1) would look to capture its first dual win of the season as it travels to Sioux Falls, S.D., to face four non-conference opponents on Saturday in the Augustana Duals. Teams competing are Augustana, Southwest Minnesota State, Drury (Mo.), Nebraska-Kearney, Morningside (Iowa), and Northwestern (Iowa).

SMSU Schedule:
– SMSU vs Northwestern (Iowa), 10 a.m.
– SMSU vs Morningside (Iowa), 11:30 a.m.
– SMSU vs Nebraska-Kearney, 1 p.m.
– SMSU vs Drury (Mo.), 2:30 p.m.

Last time out:
Cortez Arredondo and Andrew Petersen each went 3-1 to finish in third place in their respective brackets last weekend at the Buena Vista Open. Arredondo (149) won a 3-1 decision in his third-place match over Zach Burns of Upper Iowa. Petersen won by tiebreaker in his third-place match at 285. Taylor Curtis went 2-2 to finish in fourth place in his bracket at 125. Jackson Ryan went 2-2 in the BVU Open to finish in fourth place at 197. Ben Thompson went 3-2 on the day to finish in sixth place at 197. Justin Haneke finished the BVU Open 3-1, finishing in sixth place in his bracket.

SMSU Leaders:
Justin Haneke has racked up a 9-5 record this season including his 3-1 day at the BVU Open while wrestling at 157. Cortez Arredondo has an 8-3 record on the year with three pins and five wins by decision. Andrew Petersen (HWT) has tallied an 8-5 record so far this season. Ben Thompson has a 7-4 record so far this season. Dru Kuchenbaker has a 3-2 record this season with two major decisions and one tech fall.

Northwestern (Iowa) Match Notes:
– SMSU leads the all-time series against Northwestern, 6-1
– The Mustangs won the first six all-time dual matches against Northwestern but fell, 19-16 in last year’s Augustana Duals
– SMSU won the first ever match between the two schools, 36-6 back during the 1978-79 season
– Northwestern enters the weekend with a 3-0 record after posting wins over Buena Vista, Briar Cliff and Doane (Neb.) to start the season
– Northwestern has also competed in three open tournaments to begin the 2017-18 season (DWU Open, Kearney Open, & BVU Open)

Morningside (Iowa) Match Notes:
– SMSU leads the all-time series against Morningside, 6-1-1
– SMSU has won four of the last five dual matches against Morningside including a 35-9 win in last year’s Augustana Duals
– The two teams tied, 18-18 back in the 2010-11 season
– Morningside will compete in its first duals of the season on Friday night against Hastings
– Morningside will face Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday morning before taking on SMSU for their second match of the day

#23 Nebraska-Kearney Match Notes:
– SMSU and UNK meet for just the fourth time on Saturday as the Lopers have won the first three all-time matches including a 39-9 win over SMSU in last year’s Augustana Duals
– No. 23 Nebraska-Kearney has started the season 2-0 in dual matches with wins over Fresno State and San Fancisco State
– Matt Malcom is currently ranked No. 10 in Division II at 157
– Zach Stodden is currently ranked No. 9 at 174
– Kevin Barrett is ranked No. 6 overall in DII wrestling as a HWT

Drury (Mo.) Match Notes:
– Saturday will mark the first ever dual match between Drury and SMSU
– Drury has yet to compete in any duals so far this season after opening the year competing in four open tournaments (Dan Harris Open, Kaufman-Brand Open, Joe Parisi Open, & Drury Open)
– Jared Rennick is ranked No. 12 in Divison II wrestling at 197

Up Next:
Following this weekend’s duals, the Mustangs will have four weeks without any competition as they’ll prepare to compete in the Minnesota State Duals on Jan. 6. SMSU will open its NSIC schedule on Jan. 18 at Augustana before hosting its first NSIC duals on Jan. 19 against Northern State.
