NDSU Rolls to Wins over Franklin & Marshall, Columbia at South Beach Duals

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – North Dakota State University won 14 bouts overall including five tech falls, four pins and a major decision in rolling to a 34-10 win over Franklin & Marshall and 31-10 victory over Columbia University on Saturday, Dec. 30, during the second day of the South Beach Duals at the Deerfield Beach Sportsplex. The Bison compiled a 3-1 record in the two-day event.

North Dakota State (4-5, 0-3 #Big12WR) returns to the mat 6 p.m. Central Time on Friday, Jan. 5, at Pitt (1-5, ACC). The Bison then take on West Virginia (1-3, 0-1 #Big12WR) in a Big 12 Conference dual at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, in Morgantown.

Three NDSU wrestlers, No. 23-ranked 133 Cam Sykora, 149 Kyle Gliva and No. 19 165 Andrew Fogarty completed the South Beach Duals with 4-0 records, while No. 15 157 Clay Ream went 3-0, and 125 Paul Bianchi and 197 Cordell Eaton both compiled 3-1 records.

Sykora, a sophomore from Wheaton, Minn. (Wheaton HS), opened with a 19-3 tech fall at 4:41 over Franklin & Marshall’s Dan Martoccio and followed with his first pin of the season at 4:19 over Columbia’s Christopher Scorese. Sykora improved to 15-3 overall and 6-0 in duals. He extended his dual record to 18-0.

Gliva, a senior from Inver Grove Heights, Minn. (Simley HS), muscled his way to an 11-5 decision over Wilfredo Gil of Franklin & Marshall and rallied for a 5-2 decision against the Blue Lions’ No. 25 Jacob Macalolooy. He has won nine of his last 11 matches to improve to 15-8 overall and 5-3 in duals.

Fogarty, a sophomore from Jordan, Minn. (Scott West HS), followed the same script with his second pin of the weekend and fifth overall in 1:50 over F&M’s Jacob Conners. Fogarty notched his fourth tech fall, 18-0 at 6:27, against Tyler Zimmer of Columbia. He pushed his record to 22-6 overall and 6-3 in duals.

Two NDSU wrestlers, 174 Charley Popp and 184 Nick Knutson, both collected their first collegiate dual wins.
