British hiker found dead in Greece’s Pindus mountains

The body of a British hiker who went missing in the mountains of northern Greece has been found by search and rescue teams.

The man, named as Robert Frome, 26, apparently fell into a gorge while walking in the Pindus mountains of northwestern Greece, close to the border with Albania.

The paralegal assistant had been missing since Sunday, with the search hampered by the fact that his mobile phone was turned off.

Had the phone been turned on, rescuers would have managed to pinpoint his position through its signal.

He was reported missing by his father after the young man failed to return to the hotel they were staying in, in the town of Konitsa.

His car was found in the village of Mikro Papigo on Monday evening.

An extensive search involving Greek helicopters, emergency rescue officers and sniffer dogs resulted in his body being found on the slopes of a ravine.

An operation was launched on Thursday to try to retrieve his body, with the involvement of a Greek navy helicopter with specialist rescuers on board.

But the steep terrain meant that the effort had to be called off.

“We have seen from a helicopter that there is a body in the ravine,” a Greek police spokeswoman told The Telegraph.

“But it is in a very, very difficult location. We are waiting for specialists to arrive from other parts of Greece and we will try to recover the body on Friday.”

Mr Frome’s death bore similarities to that of another Briton who recently died while hiking in Greece.

Dr Natalie Christopher, 35, an astrophysicist and keen trail runner, went for a morning run on the Aegean island of Ikaria in August.

Her body was later discovered at the bottom of a 65ft-deep ravine, about a mile from the hotel where she and her boyfriend had been staying, with investigators saying she had slipped and fallen.

The Oxford-educated scientist lived in Cyprus, where she was an advocate for women getting involved in sport as well as reconciliation between the Greek south and the Turkish north of the divided island.
