HOUSTON — Houston Texans Owner Bob McNair, the man who brought NFL football back to the City of Houston after the Oilers moved to Nashville in 1997, died peacefully Friday at the age of 81.
Team officials announced McNair’s passing on the team’s Twitter account on Friday night.

McNair was awarded the franchise after owners voted 29-0 to bring the NFL back to Houston in 1999. The city and fans who were stung by the departure of their beloved Houston Oilers, embraced the new expansion franchise with many actively taking part in online contests to choose team colors, logos and the teams name.
Ultimately, it was the steel blue and scarlet of the Houston Texans that McNair chose and unveiled. The Texans took the field in 2002 with rookie quarterback David Carr leading the franchise to a win in the team’s very first home game against cross-state rival the Dallas Cowboys at the start of the 2002 season.
The Texans would finish with a 4-12 record in their inaugural season.
Since the Texans inaugural season, the franchise has made three playoff appearances, with two of those under current head coach Bill O’Brien.
O’Brien, who was awarded a contract extension in the off-season, has always had high praise for McNair.
