Indian Army Ready To Rescue Indian Citizens As Political Crisis Deepens In Maldives

Maldives is engulfed in a political crisis, after the President Abdulla Yameen defied a Supreme Court ruling to reinstall opposition MPs and release political prisoners. He instead declared a state of emergency, sent in troops to the Supreme Court and ordered the arrest of a predecessor.

The Armed forces are on standby for any contingency in the Maldives, from the evacuation of Indian tourists to military intervention in the archipelago, but there is no political directive to swing into action as yet.

The armed forces, which keep a close watch on “developments” in the entire neighbourhood, were “prepared for any eventuality” and “deployment at short notice”.
