I was doing my weekly virtual window shopping when I noticed something interesting. Oscar de la Renta clutches were selling out everywhere. For me, this seems a bit unusual. I mean, Oscar de la Renta is much more well-known for his gorgeous eveningwear and breathtaking ballgowns. I don’t think this designer has ever been fully recognized for his handbags. But with Oscar de la Renta’s passing last month, I think bagistas are realizing just how unappreciated his handbags really were. So these pieces have been selling out as everyone tries to hold on to a little piece of him and his legacy. I suppose this shouldn’t come as such a huge surprise though. It seems that famous people only become more famous after their deaths. This has been shown to be true for musicians, actors, and many others. I don’t think designers are any different in this regard.
The more I look at Oscar de la Renta’s creations, the more I find myself admiring them. The Goa Box Clutch is probably the most recognizable style. I suppose because these lovely creations pair so nicely with his equally lovely ballgowns. The clasp is the undisputed signature of this piece. The matching jeweled clasp perched atop each Goa Box Clutch reminds me of a vintage brooch, much like the ones in my grandma’s jewelry box. Overall designs vary with these clutches from simple satin to bead or sequin embellishments. My favorites are the heavily encrusted ones, like the Oscar de la Renta Sequin-Embellished Goa Clutch pictured above. I love the iridescent sequins and seed beads throughout. Talk about gorgeous!
