The British Retail Consortium, the voice of the high street, is being torn apart by bitter in-fighting among members – just as they should be pulling together in the face of scrutiny over issues such as supermarket competition and relaxing Sunday trading rules. The focus of anger for several high street chains is BRC director-general Kevin Hawkins. They claim he is not reflecting their views accurately in the face of mounting concerns about the way the sector is portrayed. Last week, following pressure from retailers on thr BRC management board, retail veteran Sir Geoff Mulcahy was named as the consortium’s new chairman. His appointment came after pressure from non-food members of the BRC – particularly department stores – which complained that Hawkins was too focused on the supermarket sector.
