Springboks: Thomas du Toit handed three-week ban while France scrum-half Antoine Dupont has suspension halved

Springboks prop Thomas du Toit has been handed a three-week suspension following his sending off against England in their Autumn Nations Series clash.

The 27-year-old was given a red card by referee Angus Gardner in last weekend’s game at Twickenham, but his team comfortably held on to prevail 27-13.

Red card against England

Du Toit received his marching orders against England for a dangerous hit on replacement hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie which occurred in the 60th minute.

The Springbok appeared via a video link before an independent judicial committee, who decided that it was a reckless incident, rather than intentional.

He will miss the Sharks‘ United Rugby Championship clash with Ospreys on Friday, as well as Champions Cup matches with Harlequins and Bordeaux.

However, the Bordeaux-Begles meeting will not be included if the powerful South Africa tighthead prop completes a coaching intervention programme.

Elsewhere, Toulouse received a major boost after France captain and scrum-half Antoine Dupont had his four-week suspension reduced to two on appeal.

The influential player was shown a red card for a challenge on Springbok wing Cheslin Kolbe during the Autumn Nations Series and his ban is now served.

Can now take on Munster

That means Dupont can return to the Toulouse squad for this week’s clash with Perpignan as they look to consolidate their place at the Top 14 summit.

It also makes him available to play in the French side’s mouth-watering Champions Cup opener with Munster at Thomond Park on Sunday, December 11.

Toulouse recently announced the signing of England and former Wasps back-row Jack Willis, while they also have Italy star Ange Capuozzo this season.

Le Rouge et Noir won the European Cup for a record fifth time in 2021, when they overcame French rivals La Rochelle 22-17 in the final at Twickenham.
