CHARLOTTE, NC — Police have identified Trystan Andrew Terrell, 22, as the accused gunman behind the deadly shooting in a classroom on the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus Tuesday night. The shooting left two students dead and four others injured.
Police have not yet released details regarding Terrell’s motive for the shooting, however here are some things we’re learning about Terrell.
He was a UNCC student.
Terrell was a history student, but he withdrew from a full course load at the end of last semester, according to multiple reports. He was enrolled in one class, the one where the shooting took place, according to WBTV.
He was not on the radar of police.
Terrell had no criminal record in Mecklenburg County. He was not someone on the radar of UNCC police, according to Chief Jeff Baker, head of UNCC police and public safety.
One of his victims died trying to stop him.
Riley Howell, 21, and classmate Ellis Parlier, 19, were pronounced dead on the scene. According to students in the room at the time of the shooting, Howell was shot as he attempted to jump on Terrell, WSOC reported.
He had lived in Charlotte for two years.
Terrell moved to Charlotte from Texas with his father two years ago, The Charlotte Observer said. Based on voter registration records, he lived in an apartment near Chantilly Park at Weddington Avenue and East 7th Street.
He was apprehended by campus police, who had trained for an active shooter scenario.
The head of UNCC security said campus officers had trained for such an incident and one officer went to the suspect immediately to take him down. “We responded immediately and we were able to take the suspect into custody,” said Chief Jeff Baker, head of UNCC police and public safety. “Our officers’ actions definitely saved lives. There’s no doubt about that.”
