WWE Reportedly Eying Controversial Location for Shawn Michaels’ Return to the Ring

The surprise return of The Undertaker this past Monday night has lead to an unexpected amount of buzz behind WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels potentially coming out of retirement for “one more match”.

The idea of HBK wrestling one more time has been discussed among fans for years, with Michaels himself maintaining that he would never lace up his boots again. Even many wrestlers backstage assumed that he would return to the ring after working a program with Daniel Bryan that ultimately led to the main event at WrestleMania XXX, but obviously nothing ever came to fruition.

Undertaker and Michaels came face-to-face on Monday to promote the Deadman’s upcoming match against Triple H at WWE Super Show-Down, but their segment turned into something much more than anyone had expected heading into Raw.

Michaels claimed that he has stayed retired “out of respect” for Undertaker, who ended his career at WrestleMania, but the Phenom questioned whether it was respect or fear that really kept him from coming back. The two heavily teased a match, and as noted earlier in the week by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, it is well known backstage that Vince McMahon absolutely hates setting up major programs if they have no chance of going anywhere.

In the latest edition of theĀ Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer followed up his original report by adding that the “working idea internally” is in fact for Shawn Michaels to wrestle another match, and that the current target is for him to work a tag team program at the upcoming Saudi Arabia show on November 2nd.

While this news will obviously disappoint WWE fans living in the U.S., or any international fans hoping the return would happen at WrestleMania, where they could fly in to witness the landmark moment in person, the reality is that WWE is making more money off these Saudi Arabia deals than anything they do throughout the year, including WrestleMania.

Michaels did note earlier this year that if he chose to come back, it would likely not be in a singles match, and fans would have to understand that they wouldn’t be getting “Mr. WrestleMania” showing up to have the best match of the night, due to his age and time away from the ring.

Leading speculation is that if HBK does come back for some kind of tag team program, that the obvious decision would be to have him team with Triple H. Given the direction of the Raw promo and the upcoming match in Melbourne, Australia, it could be to set up DX taking on The Undertaker and a partner. Again, this is pure speculation, but if they do go that route the most obvious decision would seem to indicate a DX vs. Brothers of Destruction match.
