Will CONCACAF pull a CONMEBOL?

The Concachampions Group stages are over. As it has happened in the two previous tournaments, all four Mexican sides have qualified for the quarterfinals. This time, though, there are two first place teams, and two second place teams. Santos and Monterrey both won their groups, as did Real Salt Lake and Olimpia. The runners up are Cruz Azul, Toluca, Columbus and Saprissa.

Regulation stipulates that the 1st place teams will be in one bowl, and will be drawn against the 2nd place teams.

Since 2000, the final has featured teams from the same country 7 times. Will CONCACAF do its best CONMEBOL imitation and try to ensure a final with teams from two countries?

For the 2007 Libertadores, CONMEBOL determined mid-tournament that teams from the same country would not meet in the final and pitted the remaining Brazilian squads in the semis, regardless of brackets. Both ’05 and ’06 finals were Brazilian derbies.

CONCACAF could make one half of the bracket a Mexican fiesta, thus ensuring a two country final.

Will there be ice-cold bolitas in the bowl, or will the Draw be on the level?
