Wallabies second-row Darcy Swain has been banned for six games for his dangerous clean-out of All Black Quinn Tupaea in last week’s Bledisloe I Test.
Swain made forceful contact with Tupaea’s lower leg in the motion of cleaning out at a ruck, resulting in a yellow card for the Wallaby and a season-ending knee injury for the All Black.
The 25-year-old was selected to represent Australia’ A’ on their upcoming tour but will now be unavailable. However, the star will be able to play in the Wallabies‘ November Tests.
Red card offence
Sanzaar’s judicial committee found Swain’s actions as a red card offence, contravening Law 9.11 which states: “Players must not do anything that is reckless or dangerous to others”.
Swain’s hearing was held on Wednesday with chair Andre Oosthuizen, De Wet Barry and José Luis Rolandi.
The conclusions from the hearing found: “Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, having heard from the player and from his legal representative, Aaron Lloyd, the judicial =committee upheld the citing and deemed the incident meet the red card threshold for Law 9.11.
“With respect to sanction the judicial committee deemed the act of foul play merited a mid-range entry point of six (6) weeks. Through the actions by the player such as position, control, and player movements they found the incident was not intentional, however, it was highly reckless.”
Tupaea’s season over
All Blacks coach Ian Foster was upset with the dangerous play and underlined how Tupaea has had his season ended because of the reckless act.
“We’ve got a player who’s probably out for nine months and you’re not allowed to target legs on the side at clean-out past the ball. The rules are pretty clear,” Foster said.
Swain misses the Wallabies’ final round clash against the All Blacks at Eden Park in the Rugby Championship finale this weekend.
